How Hilti modular support systems are used around the world

At Hilti we are proud to support some of the most awe-inspiring feats of engineering around the world. Let's take a look at a few examples of how our modular support systems have made a difference.

TABAKALERA, SAN SEBASTIÁN SPAIN: Transforming a tobacco factory into a major Cultural Centre

Hilti jobsite reference tabakalera San Sebastián Spain

Tabakalera used to be a tobacco factory, but to celebrate San Sebastián’s role as Capital of European Culture in 2016, it was transformed into a massive new Centre for Contemporary Culture.

It's a huge building and the aim was to create 30,000 mof space for exhibitions, cinemas, media archive and even a hotel, with the whole project costing over €50 million.

The purpose of the building changed and so new floors, new interior areas and a totally new glass roof was built as part of the project. The ceilings were made out of lots of different materials, such as old steel beams, as well as hollow slabs, composite slabs and traditional concrete slabs.

Our Hilti MQ System was key in supporting all the necessary technical installations and we supplied more than 14,000 metres of our Hilti MQ channel system. Using our direct fastening technologies, the workers could fasten the channel system directly to steel structures and our Hilti HUS screw anchor was used for fastening in concrete.

After four years of construction, the Tabakalera opened in 2015, well in time for San Sebastián’s year as Capital of European Culture the following year!

INDUSTRIAL WAREHOUSE, VICENZA ITALY: Installing a seismic proof sprinkler system

Hilti jobsite reference industrial warehouse Vicenza Italy

A large industrial warehouse in Vicenza needed to install sprinklers, which posed several challenges. It was a very large warehouse with a surface of more than 3,000 m2The modular support system needed to be seismic proof and the base material was very thin, making it difficult to attach the support system.

We worked closely with the contractor Idrotermotre who chose our Hilti MQS modular support system for the project. It’s extremely flexible, easy to assemble and designed to withstand the effects of earthquakes.

The modular support system had to fit into tight spaces and also encountered many obstacles due to the shape of the roof beams. This meant that many decisions had to be taken onsite, regarding the arrangement of the pipes and where to fasten the supports. Our Hilti technical team (sales engineer and technical department) worked with the contractor throughout the installation.

We defined all the modular support systems needed, carried out multiple inspections and provided technical advice and support to the contractors during installation. This helped to install the support system quickly, safely and correctly.

The contractor also used a range of anchors including Hilti HST expansion anchors for seismic loads, Hilti HUS3 screw anchors for shallow base materials and Hilti HIT-HY 270 chemical anchor for hollow base materials.

BUILDING METRO LINE 9, BARCELONA SPAIN: Flexible building systems for raised floors

Hilti modular support systems MQ-41 and MQ-72 for medium-heavy duty applications

Barcelona’s new metro line 9 connects the north and south of the city and is nearly 50 km long with more than 50 new stations, most of them underground.

We’ve been helping to create raised floors for the control rooms in several stations along the line. Our engineering teams came up with a customised solution for each control room that allowed for lateral and vertical adjustments.

To cover the floors’ load requirements we advised the customer to use our Hilti MQ-41 and MQ-72 channel systems. All this was fastened to concrete slabs using Hilti HUS3 screw anchors.
