Impact wrench and impact driver buying guide

Fastening bolts, driving screws, or both? An impact wrench and impact driver can be a useful addition to any modern day tool bag. Our brief guide will take you through some of the basics and what you need to consider when buying an impact driver or an impact wrench.

 

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

What is an impact driver?

An impact driver is mainly used for driving fasteners, such as screws or bolts, into a surface. This could be in wood or metal, with the tool helping the relevant fastener to penetrate the surface you’re working on. Tasks where you would use an impact driver could include the installation of decking, joinery and general construction tasks. 

What is an impact wrench?

As the name suggests, the primary feature of an impact wrench is to tighten nuts or bolts – in the same manner as a manual spanner or wrench, but via a power tool. In the same way it can be used to tighten, it can also be used to loosen fastenings. The impact wrench is mainly used in the automotive, heavy construction, mechanical and engineering sectors.   

What is the difference between an impact driver and drill?

While impact drivers and drill drivers share similar traits, there is one big difference: Impact drivers are used for driving screws and bolts into a surface, whereas a drill driver is used for making holes in a surface. 

Some drill drivers are capable of driving screws into a surface, but for regular driving an impact driver would be more efficient. Likewise, an impact driver can drill holes into a surface with after-market accessories (not recommended for all products), but it won’t be as efficient as a regular drill. Drilling with an impact driver can also be limited by the speed and torque settings available.  

Chuck and anvil types

The chuck type is a feature that  separates most impact drivers and wrenches from  regular drills.

Impact driver chuck

An impact driver will normally have a chuck that holds hold a 1/4” hex shank bit. Other sizes are available, but this is the most common. Essentially, this would mirror a screwdriver or similar tool to help with driving fastenings. This differs from conventional drill drivers, which have openings for a range of drill bit sizes.

Impact wrench anvil

On an impact wrench, rather than a chuck holding drill bits, it is an ‘anvil’ that holds sockets and delivers power during an application. There are two main types of anvil, a detent pin and a friction ring. A detent pin anvil uses a spring loaded mechanism to secure sockets in place. A friction ring, also known as a “hog ring”, is a ‘c’-shaped clip that is placed onto the anvil and grips the inside of the socket securely to hold it in place.

Friction Ring

Pros:

  • Allows for quick changes of sockets
  • Offers strong hold
  • Ease of use

Cons:

  • Ring will wear out over time
  • Less secure vs detent pin
  • Not suited for precision due to potential wobble

Detent Pin

Pros:

  • Offers more secure fitting, with additional pin alignment
  • Ideal for tasks requiring precise control
  • Reduced slippage

Cons:

  • Harder to remove
  • Needs extra time to align the pin
  • Slows work down when using multiple sockets

Torque and Speed

As these products focus on driving, tightening and loosening, this means that torque and speed are crucial factors in your buying process.  

An impact driver will have less torque output vs an impact wrench. This is primarily due  to the applications they are used for. While many have an output of up to 400 Nm torque, Hilti has drivers that range up to 1000 Nm. Higher torque is best for driving larger screws into tougher materials. Low-mid-range torque products are  suitable for screws and smaller fasteners. As always, variable speed settings offer better range and control, so RPM range also plays a factor.

Impact wrench products will have different max torque outputs and range in which they operate. The higher the torque, the tougher the jobs your wrench can handle. . Choosing a wrench with adjustable torque settings can ensure you avoid over-tightening, especially in applications where precision in needed.

Size, weight and comfort

For both these tools, given that one handed operation is also possible, their size and weight are something that buyers should  consider. In addition, if you’re operating the tool overhead height for extended periods, weight also becomes a factor, particularly around  fatigue, H&S, and productivity. The toughest applications will usually need the most powerful, and therefore heavier, products.

Many power tools, including wrench and drivers, offer rubberised,  ergonomic grip. This makes the tool easier and more comfortable to use, especially over prolonged periods of use.As with most tools, LED lighting around the anvil or chuck also make it easier to use and guide during operation – especially in dark and cramped conditions

Brushless vs carbon brushes motor

At the heart of your wrench or driver will be a motor that drives the tool. The motor will either be a brushless motor or carbon brush motor.

Motors that use carbon brushes, also known as “brushed motors”, will create more friction, heat and wear over the lifespan of the motor. Brushless motors, which use magnets or electronics to operate instead of carbon brushes, create less heat and friction, which can prolong the lifespan of the motor and tool.

However, as build components for a brushless motor are more sophisticated than carbon brush alternatives, there is a higher cost to pay for brushless power tools and other products.

So while a motor with carbon brushes may be cheaper, it may not last as long as you need it. This is a big factor to consider if you’re going to be using the tool frequently. In addition, you may be faced with more frequent repair and maintenance costs during the lifespan of the tool.

Cordless or corded

Most workshops, vans and professionals will carry a mix of corded and cordless tools. But when it comes to an impact wrench or driver, what’s the best option? This usually depends on a number of factors, which usually come down to who is using it, the application, and the convenience that you require.

For manoeuvrability, especially in cramped conditions, a cordless tool is  the more favourable option. This also adds to the benefits when you need the freedom to move in a number of locations around a task i.e. changing the wheels on a truck, fasten or unfastening bolts across a wide surface area. A cordless tool is also the preferred option if trailing cables is a tripping risk to the user and others on site.

In addition, if there isn’t a live power source available, cordless options make a perfect choice.

The argument for corded products stands for those tasks where a constant power source is needed, and the inconvenience of maintaining and storing charged battery packs outweighs the use of corded tools.

As there is less additional weight on a corded product (e.g. compared to a cordless tool with a battery pack) it can make prolonged use easier and less tiresome. And depending on the model chosen, a corded tool may be more cost-effective in comparison to a cordless tool. .   

Accessories to consider

The accessories you use can be equally as important when it comes to getting the job done right. High quality tools require high quality inserts to maintain their lifetime and durability.

Socket set accessories

For an impact wrench, a good impact socket set is crucial. The best ones will be designed to withstand immense force from impact wrenches, while offering durability, efficiency and safety. This can be when performing work such as loosening or tightening bolts, nuts, and fasteners.

Friction ring clips

If your wrench uses a friction ring you may want to consider additional retaining ring clips. With repeated use and pulling off, they can be prone to more wear and tear.  

Impact driver bit set

A quality bit set for impact drivers can help with efficient driving across various materials and stop slippage when working with different fastener types.

Belt clips and carry cases

Belt clips are especially useful when using cordless tools and help to keep your tools close and remove any trip hazards when tools are placed on the ground. A good carry case is also useful for storage when you’re not using tools.
